Butchart Gardens took 9 years to cultivate on five acres of what was once a depleted quarry. Around 1912 cement production exhausted the limestone deposits and so began the start of Jennie Buchart's masterpiece. The topsoil was brought in by horse and cart and it gradually blossomed into what you see today. The night lighting was added in 1939.
