A provocative statue that doesn't sugarcoat the history and chaos of the Roman empire felt across Europe and Africa. A Sabine woman abducted and carried away while her partner cowers below her. Standing around the cafés and tourist crowds looking up at this monument felt odd – but at least it's an honest statue not guising the fact that so many historical (and modern) empires were built on sheer brutality and inequality.
