Singapore is a city of constant renewal. Unfortunately, it spelled the end of an era of brutalist architecture in Singapore. Monolithic brutalist buildings like the People’s Park Complex, pictured here, were constructed on the cusp of our nation’s independence. They represented ideals of nationhood and neighbourliness in a period of extreme uncertainty. Today, they’re ugly giants that don’t match with our city’s steel-and-glass cityscape. Almost all brutalist buildings in Singapore are slated for demolition, to make way for a new generation of buildings.
