An unforgettable, humbling experience to stand and remember the fallen of my own homeland, in the haunting surrounds of the almost exclusively Dutch civilian Prisoner of War Cemetery in Bandung, Indonesia. After the invasion by Japan in WWII, Camp Kareës in Bandung (Bandoeng) was one of the civilian internee camps for the then Dutch East Indies. There were 37 POW (for mainly Australian and New Zealand troops) and civilian internee camps across Java, Ambon, Timor, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi and Kalimantan (modern day names). Over 100,000 Dutch civilians were interned.
