Dhangkar, the former erstwhile capital of Spiti, was home to royal family 300 years ago.Today very little remains in this town except a ancient monastery perched on a hillside cliff & a fort. Aside from beautiful views, the Dhangkar Gompa features a Dhyan Buddha statue and a modest museum with scriptures & murals. The settlement of Shichilling is below the monastery, and there is a new monastery there that houses roughly 150 monks from the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. The village literally lives on an edge overlooking the confluence of Spiti and Pin rivers.
