British soldiers arriving in a village, during World War I British soldiers arriving in a village. They are surrounded by women and children. One soldier has lifted a young girl onto his bicycle. They are all walking along a muddy road through the village. The buildings in the distance appear to be untouched by bombing or shelling. The arrival of allied troops in a village was cause for great excitement. Once troops entered a village they were often housed with local families. This was a welcome opportunity for rest and a diversion for the locals.
