Mexico’s island archipelago Revillagigedo —off the coast of Baja California— is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was declared a marine reserve and national park in 2017. I find this picture interesting because of the composition of the photo itself, but also because it comes closely attached to a huge win for marine conservation, and a funny story. The picture was taken 4 months before Mexico’s government finally declared it a marine reserve —in part thanks to Mexico’s President’s admiration of Leonardo Di Caprio and the actor’s work in wildlife conservation, despite years of work by many.
