Dutch and Chinese traders were the only foreigners who were allowed into Japan during the sakoku period which lasted for 214 years. The Dutch, who were sailing for the VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Companie), were restricted to a small artificial island in Nagasaki from 1641 until the Kanagawa treaty in 1854. The island is called Dejima or Deshima if you like. The photo shows a replica of one of the trader's warehouses, where the administration of the incoming and outgoing goods was done at the entrance, hence the abacus that we can see on the desk.
