I shot this photo in mid-March 2020, just as NYC was entering lockdowns. I remember walking around that day, stunned by how such usually busy areas as Times Square and Herald Square were nearly empty. A normally bustling city felt eerie and desolate. At the time, NYC public health authorities were asking people to help "flatten the curve," a phrase that would, over the coming weeks, seem to morphe into an ideal of eliminating any COVID risk altogether, at profound societal costs and civil rights risks.
