Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple. What I thought were thousands of Buddhas turned out to be Rakan, Buddha’s followers. They were carved by amateurs studying under a master sculptor and monk. The expressions range wildly, and some even have modern accessories like cameras and musical instruments (they were made in the ’80s). Some of the statues are even gossiping with each other.
