priest and lion statue

On the top of the "Door of the paper" in the Doge's Palace of Venice, you can see the doge Francesco Foscari who greets the winged lion of San Sarco, with the opened gospel. When the gospel of San Marco are opened, in paintings and sculptures, the meaning is that Venice are under a period of peace. The war is when the gospel is closed and the Lion keep up the sword.
