The Moki Dugway is one of the strangest pieces of road you will find in the Western US. Built to accommodate trucks bringing uranium down to the processing plant, the road is literally sliced out of the side of a mesa and can be harrowing for drivers not expecting it. Highway 261 goes north from Mexican Hat toward Hite, Utah and it is flat and fairly straight (see photo). Then it gets to the Dugway, and things change quickly. The road is dirt/gravel/washboard and the super tight hairpin turns are paved, steep, and covered with gravel.
