The volcanic rock used in this and many other Aztec carvings from Central America is lightweight. It is almost porous. The holes are caused by slowly dissipating volcanic gas which leaves empty cavities. The dark color is partially due to the iron content of the rock. The seated figure is likely of a mortal ruler.
