As the Brooklyn neighborhood Park Slope gentrified, the owner of this brownstone painted his residence pink. When I took this shot, Henry, originally from the West Indies, was in his 90’s and had lived in his home for over 40 years. His paint job caused an uproar from the “new” neighbors who believed he defiled the neighborhood and lowered their property values. When I asked Henry why he painted his home pink, he told me that “I really like pink and it reminds me of growing up in the Caribbean and It’s really nobody’s damn business what color I want my home to be.” It’s no longer pink.
