1930. Jockey Jim Pike is pictured riding Phar Lap during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Flemington race track is shown in the background. Pike wears a silk top that has white stripes on the arms. He wears a dark helmet and white jodpurs. Phar Lap's white saddle cloth bears the number 6, which is the number he wore during the Melbourne Stakes, the main race on Derby Day (the first Saturday of the carnival.)
