man in black coat statue

Monument to King William III (a.k.a. William of Orange, King Billy) who was decisive in the destiny of the United Kingdom, and is a divisive figure to this day. He is embraced by Protestants in Northern Ireland as "The Defender of the [Protestant] Faith," some of whom are known as "Orangemen." There is an annual celebration amongst Protestants in Northern Ireland on July 11th commemorating the Battle of Boyne (1690) in which William defeated the Catholic troops from France and Ireland led by James II (picture taken Jan., 2020).
