I have made 14 pilgrimages to the “Holy Mountain” over 30 years. This is just one of some 22 monasteries that span the Athonite peninsula. At one time thousands of monks and hermits lived here…today they number a couple of hundred. This is the largest Christian monastic enclave in the world.
