Designated one of the 10 Great Trees of the World by the National Geographic Society, the Emancipation Oak was the location where Mary Smith Peake taught basic education to children of freedmen during The American Civil war and where the first Southern reading of President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation took place.
