The tuatara is a lizard-like reptile often described as a living fossil and can only be found in New Zealand. They are in fact not lizards but the only living member of the order Rhynchocephalia, which flourished around 200 million years ago. Tuataras are incredibly special and here are some interesting facts about them: - The name "Tuatara" comes from the Maori for "peaks on the back." - Can live up to 100 years in the wild. - Have a third eye on the top of their head which has a retina, lens, cornea, and nerve endings, but it is not used for vision.
