I found this polyphemus moth on the driveway and he is alive, but battered. When he folds his “eyes”, he looks like a dead leaf. The eyes are a deterrent to predators. I think the eyes make him look part owl! There have been very windy days and the wind is hard on a large moth. The caterpillars of these moths will eat any leaves but prefer the wild cherries that grow all around the woods here. The caterpillars are venomous and although fuzzy-looking and cute, they can give a painful sting.
