macro photography of green viper

In this photo of a green tree python, you can see the eye and the nostril, but also the heat sensing pits in the lower jaw and beneath the nostril. These snakes eat warm-blooded prey and the heat sensing pits on both sides of the mouth help to not only detect the prey in the dark, but also which side it is on, and how far away it is. Rattlesnakes and other pit vipers also have similar pits and abilities.
