September to November is the red deer rut in the Northern Hemisphere. The adult stags begin to bellow, something they can only do at this special time of year. If you look carefully at the deer in the photo, you can see a wound in his side from another stag where they have fought. This deer was well and healing a few days later when I saw him again.
