In June 2017 I had just finished a long, crowded and hot tour of the Vatican Museum. We were told we could turn left and exit the museum, or turn right and enter St. Peter’s Basilica. I decided to turn right. Even though there were thousands of people inside, it felt cool and empty. I stared at the ceiling in awe. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to be an Italian peasant in the 17th century, seeing the splendor and magnificence for the first time. If I were in awe, imagine how incredible it must have been for someone whose most impressive building was their local church…
