This beautiful eight-legged lady spent the best part of summer in our back garden. She made a new orb-shaped web every night (I understand that she eats the web in the early morning hours and sleeps the day away close to her web location, although I never was up early enough to see this). Spiders of this species (Eriophora transmarina) are quite large, and relatively common in Australia, and will bite when provoked. I used hand-held DSLR camera with inbuilt flash to take this photo, giving me nice detail o both spider and web and good contrast.
