Fun fact: This was one of the locations astronauts on the Apollo missions trained. NASA scientists had them train at several locations in central Oregon's diverse geological landscape so they'd be better prepared for walking on the moon. This little-known beauty is Fort Rock and is located in the Oregon high desert. It formed during the ice age when a large volcano erupted beneath an ice age lake. It was eroded by the lake waters and today, sits on a slight slope. I’ve done the hike along the inside rim but only a photo from far away can do it justice.
