Al-ʿUla was the capital of the ancient Lihyanites (Dedanites). Jabal Ikmah contains hundreds of etched inscriptions acting as an open library for the Lihyanic and Dadanitic cultures. The walled city of Al-'Ula is packed with mud-brick and stone houses.
