a very bright object in the dark sky

View from our home of SpaceX launching a satellite from Vandenberg AFB in California. Two burns are going at once here, one the second stage, taking the satellite to orbit. The other is the first stage, burning its way back to land successfully on land at the launch site for the first time ever.
