Blackhead Point, the old name of Signal Hill, is a small hill originally on the tip of Kowloon Peninsula. Typhoon signals were once hoisted at a building beside the Signal Tower completed in 1907 to install a timeball for the Observatory to signal accurate time for ships. Blackhead Point, once also a military defence battery, marked the tip of the original coastline of Kowloon Peninsula. Large scale land reclamation later took place in Tsim Sha Tsui and Blackhead Point's location has become inland. The Chinese name of Blackhead Point is '大包米', which means a big bag of rice.
