A provocative statue that doesn't sugarcoat the history and chaos of the Roman empire felt across Europe and Africa. A Sabine woman abducted and carried away while her partner cowers below her. Standing around the cafés and tourist crowds looking up at this monument felt odd – but at least it's an honest statue not guising the fact that so many historical (and modern) empires were built on sheer brutality and inequality. A few years back we had that trend of hauling down statues of tyrants and slave traders. I'd like to see more honest statues that don't shy away from the reality of our hist
