The mighty hippopotamus, affectionately known as the hippo, and more specifically identified as the common hippopotamus, Nile hippopotamus, or river hippopotamus, stands as a sizable semiaquatic mammal indigenous to the diverse landscapes of sub-Saharan Africa. Within the family Hippopotamidae, it proudly shares its existence with only one other living species, the petite pygmy hippopotamus.
