Like a pink flame, the magnolia petals rise in perfect curves. This one had one petal missing, exposing the reproductive parts of the bloom. The pointy form in the center is comprised of the carpels (center top) and the stamens (the long spikes). Magnolia trees are native to the southeastern United States, but there are many to be seen here in St. Louis. Their large flowers bloom in white and pink tones in March and April, standing out boldly against the smaller blooms of cherry and plum and almond trees, all displaying their cheery celebration of spring.
