The California Nebula or NGC1499 is an emission nebula located in the constellation Perseus. It gets its name because the outline somewhat resembles the state of California. It is about 1000 light years from Earth. The emissions from the bright star Menkib in the upper center of the photo causes the hydrogen gas to glow red.
