The second evening I was shooting photos at Mono Lake near Lee Vining CA was perfect. Beautiful evening, so still. Tufas are calcium carbonate structures that were formed under water when the lake was much deeper. Natural springs brought the calcium carbonate up from underground and was deposited in these strange forms. In the early 1900's officials from Los Angeles came to the area and bought the water rights resulting in a dramatic lowering of the lake level.
