This was my first photo of the terrain at a scenic viewpoint just inside the Badlands National Park’s East entrance. Other photos we had seen in pamphlets had drawn us into the Badlands from the interstate. The first thing about this place that struck me was the scale. You think you’re looking at something big, something much larger than it really is, and you can easily traverse its endless web of narrow ridges and spines.
