This portrait was inspired by a Rupi Kaur poem from her book, The Sun and Her Flowers: “It is a blessing to be the color of earth do you know how often flowers confuse me for home.” After reading, it sparked reflections of my own personal experiences with colorism, within and outside of my culture. The concept for this portrait was to take the words of this poem and bring them to life through visual art. Secret Garden is the title of this portrait because dark skin tones are beautiful and in my experience, it seems that much of society has yet to discover and appreciate this.
