We were passing the entrance to the University of Oxford’s Bodleian Quad on a hot summer afternoon and I noticed the young woman in the photograph lingering in the cool shadows of the archway, almost tentative, looking out into the bright square of light in the quad. She seemed dwarfed by the scale of the architecture and yet perfectly framed by it in a way that really summed up the experience of the University to me and gave an immediate sense of how it feels to be part of something so large and imposing in a way, that can still be so warm and open.
