Built in 1839, the lighthouse was built to aid in the movement of ships at Bay of All Saints, when the port of Salvador was one of the busiest in South America. Today, the lighthouse is a tourist spot and houses the city’s Naucal Museum. During the summer, natives and tourists gather around the lighthouse to watch the sunset and it is tradition to applaud when the sun hides behind the sea. This is a must-do activity when visiting Salvador.
