This lotus leaf is demonstrating superhydrophobicity. A very long word for the fact the leaf has little nano structures that move the water droplets, from rain, into balls that will roll off the leaf or, on occasion, into the center of the leaf. This reduces the number of droplets on the leaf which also reduces the likelihood of insects living on the leaf and spreading diseases to the lotus.
