That was as far as you could get at Mount Aso in 2016. There was a no-entry zone of around 2km in diameter around the crater as the Volcano was very active at that time. The zone was lifted since April 2018 but the ropeway is still out of service. The volcano is in the heart of Kyushu. If visited it during my first Japan trip where I visited Tokyo, Kansai, Hiroshima and Mount Aso. That was a perfect route for 3 weeks.
