On a field mission shooting for Oxfam Intermon in Haiti, I was deep in a mangrove forest that was slowly being cut down for firewood. It was hard to see the stumps of trees protrude from the water, but I was encouraged by the training sessions that the fishermen had just completed. They learned about the role mangroves play in protecting their homes during hurricanes. Mangroves are like sleeping giants that shelter the entire coastline. I saw a new understanding develop, and a light in their eyes as the sun faded on the bay. There is hope for new sprouts and growth tomorrow.
