Sunset was scheduled for 8:30p, our travel time was estimated at 51 minutes and we were running late. The fog layer grew thick as we drove higher, and higher, twisting and curving around the mountain’s edge. Elevated at 5512 ft., Carver’s Gap provides a near-360 degree overlook of the mountains on the border of both the Pisgah National Forest and Cherokee National Forest (also the border of Tennessee and North Carolina). Although the layers of hills were hidden beneath the fog, these colors absolutely enhance the beauty of Roan Mountain itself.
