From digital, to film, to a phone — we reached out to 10 Unsplash photographers to find out which camera they love to use and why.

Leica M10

“I use a Leica M10 with a 28mm sum-micron. I love it because for the first time in a long time; it's the only camera that when I wake up in the mornings and see it, I just get more inspired, more driven, more ambitious, and confident to go out and shoot. I never get bored of the camera or of shooting. The simplicity of it, you work the camera. It doesn’t have all these fancy features like others, yet it is still elegantly fancy. I mean, it’s mad gorgeous.” - Frankie Cordoba

Polaroid

“I love instant photography because some of the effects and photos you can get using the Polaroid are incredible. Sometimes they fail but even the failures can be artistic. I love analog tech, takes me back to the past.” - Nik Jones

DJI Mavic Air

“Drone photography is a totally different perspective. Already from 5m in the air, everything looks very different. What I love most about the DJI Mavic Air is its portability, I can take it with me on a bike trip or a beach walk.” - Bernd Dittrich

Canon 6D

“My first real DSLR was a Canon T3i and that kind of set me along the Canon route. I'm very used to the menus and operation on canon bodies now and so it's what I'm most comfortable with. The camera I have now is a 6D and its honestly a tank. I've had it out in some of the worst conditions and its managed to pull through!” - Erik Mclean

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II + MSM Rotator Star Tracker

"I use an Olympus OM-D Em10 Mark II and the lenses 12mm 2.8 / 50mm 1.8. And, also very important, I use a star tracker that allows you to make long exposure photos and capture the stars without moving.

I personally use the MSM Rotator Star Tracker that is small and very easy to use and carry. I like to capture images with an Olympus camera because the cameras are really light weight, and portable, and offer a lot of features that help the photographer (for example Live Composite Mode for star trails). But most importantly, the camera doesn't make the photographer, and you have to figure out the best technique in order to get the best quality." - Marc Sendra Martorell

Sony Alpha A7III

“When I bought my first DSLR I didn’t really know the difference between a crop sensor and a full frame camera. I was just concerned about weight, because I like carrying my camera everywhere and full frame cameras were definitely too heavy and cumbersome for me, so I chose the Nikon D5000, which I absolutely loved. Then I got a used Nikon D7100 but I realized it wasn’t much better than my beloved D5000. I stuck with it though & took classes etc.

When mirrorless cameras came along I’d come a long way in my photography journey and I realized my dream to own a full frame camera had finally come true. After a lot of research I decided the Sony A7III was my best option. It’ similar in weight and size to my Nikons but it’s in a whole different class. I know it’s a person’s vision that makes a photo, not the camera itself, but I think that’s only true if you’re in the best of situations. If you want consistently great pictures in all kinds of situations get a mirrorless and you’ll never look back.” - Gabriella Clare

Android

“The main reason I love phone cameras is that so many people have one. With some easy, basic knowledge, uploading great photos to Unsplash that are beautiful and useful is a lot of fun. Most people will never be professional photographers, or even serious hobbyists who spend the time to learn and have the drive to invest in really nice equipment. Yet, phone cameras can take gorgeous and very useful photos within their limitations.

That said, I honestly enjoy pushing the limits of my phone. Many of my best shots are taken in portrait mode, in lower light (like the one above). Both of these things can be challenging with a phone camera, especially when combined. Some would say don't do it, and they'd be right. But for me, photography is about challenging myself to overcome the limits of my talent, my knowledge, and my equipment.” - Susan Wilkinson

Nikon D7500

“Two years ago, I replaced my Nikon D5300 with the D7500. It was important for me to buy a camera that I can afford because I don't make money with photography. This was a great choice because although it has a crop sensor, it can magically capture light. I bought a camera for up to € 800 and I already had a 50mm 1.8 lens left over from the previous camera. This is a durable camera that is not afraid of external weather and does not tend to disappoint.” - Kristaps Ungurs

“You can make photography with anything, it starts with your phone. You shouldn’t think that you can’t do photography because you don’t have the necessary equipment. As long as you have the ideas, that’s the most important thing.”
